LAKE ODESSA PADDLE TRIP

This paddling trip can vary by water levels during June, so if you've done it before you are still guaranteed a new experience. Some years we paddle the route on the map and other years we are paddling over parking lots due to high water. Any level paddler will enjoy this trip.

What to bring - Bug spray, comfortable paddling clothes, water shoes. Plan to bring layers depending on forecast evening weather.Cameras and phones should be in a waterproof pack with a way to secure them to your boat. Coolers for water or snacks are fine but no alcohol will be permitted while we paddle.
Non-paddlers are welcome to join us for the cookout and keep the fire going.

If you have your own canoe or kayak, you are welcome to bring your boat. Advance reservation and fees still apply. Call River Basin Canoe and Kayak to register and to rent boats. Box store kayaks of a small size are strongly discouraged. We paddle 4 hours without break, you need a better boat. We reserve discretion to refuse unsafe or undersized kayaks for large paddlers. Your support of this full service shop by selecting better quality and correctly fitted kayaks from paddlesport pros means these trips may continue a while longer.

Registration: $20.00 per person
Kayak rentals: $30.00 - $40.00 - single recreational, double recreational, and touring available
Canoe rentals: $60.00 includes 2 adult registration fees, paddles and lifejackets.

Odessa Water Trails
- The Odessa Water Trails is 6,400 acres of wetland. It is well known for it's migratory waterfowl and duck hunting. Situated in the Port Louisa Wildlife Refuge and Odessa Management Area a variety of wildlife can been seen any time of year. The water trail was develped as a collaboration between Tri-Rivers Conservation Foundation, Louisa County Conservation Board, Iowa Department of Natural Resources and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. DIRECTIONS: From Wapello take Hwy 99 across the Iowa River and continue 1 mile. Turn left on County Hwy G62/I Ave and continue 3.4 miles. Turn left on X61/Great River Road and drive .3 miles. Take the 1st right onto 97th St. For more help you can put Schafer Access Wapello, IA into mapquest and you will get directions.

CAMPING - Camping is available at Snively Campground, near Schafer Access. The camppground has a pit toilet, electric and non electric camping. Camping is $12 per night but may fill early on the holiday weekend. Click here for Snively Campground info.

SOUTHEAST IOWA AREA - There are two small hotels in Wapello. Burlington, 30 miles south has a variety of hotels including Super 8, Holiday Inn Express, Fairfield Inn and Americ Inn. Geode State Park, west of Burlington also has good camping, showers, hiking trail and more paddling.
Burlington has all your major fast food restaurants.

SAFETY:

- YOU MUST WEAR A LIFEVEST WHEN ON THE WATER
- PARTICIPANTS UNDER 16 MUST BE ACCOMPANIED BY A PARENT/GUARDIAN. ONE ADULT MUST BE IN EACH CANOE.
- NO ALCOHOL WILL BE PERMITTED BEFORE OR DURING PADDLE.
